Clinic Program
Details.
Day 1 – Welcome and Meeting the Horses
Upon your arrival at the lodge, you’ll be warmly greeted and shown around before diving into an overview of the clinic and what lies ahead.
Our first activity involves heading out to meet the horses in their natural setting. Learn the essentials of safely approaching and catching horses in an open field, then practice building trust and creating a bond. After leading the horses to the saddle house, you’ll spend time grooming them and learning basic care.
As evening settles, we’ll release the horses back into the field. Gather around a hearty dinner to connect with fellow participants, discuss the journey ahead, and prepare for the exciting days to come.
Day 2 – Tack Essentials and Building Confidence
Today begins with a hands-on lesson in saddling and tack. Discover how to properly fit and secure equipment to ensure both comfort and safety for your horse. You’ll also be introduced to knot-tying techniques that are crucial for backcountry riding.
Following a break for a picnic lunch, we’ll head out on your first trail ride. This ride is designed to help you grow comfortable and confident in the saddle. Along the way, you’ll learn to guide your horse through uneven terrain and gain valuable tips for navigating the wilderness.
In the evening, we’ll regroup for a lively discussion about the day’s experiences, sharing insights and ideas for improvement. Dinner will cap off a rewarding day.
Day 3 – Packing Techniques and Trail Prep
The focus of today is on packing skills. Using our “drum horse” for demonstration, you’ll learn the art of balancing and securing loads, as well as mastering the knots and methods used by seasoned packers. Efficiency and attention to detail will be emphasized.
After enjoying lunch, you’ll apply these techniques directly, working with your horse to practice packing and adjusting loads. With expert guidance, you’ll discover tips that make the process smoother and safer for you and your equine partner.
We’ll close the day with a reflective session to consolidate your knowledge, followed by a satisfying meal to fuel your anticipation for tomorrow’s adventure.
Day 4 – Heading to Camp: Embracing Wilderness Life
Today, the skills you’ve learned come to life as we venture into the wild. You’ll load up the horses and embark on a scenic ride to our overnight campsite, practicing packhorse management and load adjustments throughout the journey.
Upon reaching camp, you’ll set up using minimal gear, gaining practical experience in wilderness living. Learn to pitch tarps, secure your campsite, and create a safe, comfortable space. You’ll also receive guidance on fire-making techniques and prepare a meal together over the flames, enjoying a rustic and rewarding dinner under the stars.
The evening concludes with storytelling and reflections around the campfire, deepening your connection with nature and your fellow adventurers.
Day 5 – Wrapping Up and Returning to the Lodge
After dismantling camp and preparing the horses, we’ll ride back to the lodge. This return journey offers an opportunity to revisit the skills and techniques you’ve practiced throughout the clinic.
Once back, we’ll gather for a thoughtful debrief to celebrate your progress and discuss how to carry these lessons forward. A celebratory dinner will provide the perfect finale, filled with camaraderie and shared stories from the week.
Day 6 – Farewell
Our final breakfast together marks the end of your journey. Depart with newfound skills, cherished memories, and the confidence to tackle future wilderness adventures.
